About fifty members of the group calling itself the Coalition of Concerned Teachers have been apprehended by the Greater Accra police for defying court orders not to embark on a demonstration. Hundreds of police besieged the GNAT and T.U.C offices to prevent the Concerned Teachers from embarking on the demonstration. Early on Tuesday morning, leadership of the group agreed to forgo the hunger strike and resolve their disagreements with the leadership of GNAT legally but some of its members vowed to storm the GNAT premises for the proposed demonstration. The group reckoned that the leaders of GNAT have failed to deliver on their promises to press for better salaries for teachers hence forcing them to go on the four-day demonstration. The police sought for an injunction on the proposed demonstration scheduled for Tuesday July 12 to Friday July 16 but the group went ahead with the demonstration. A spokesperson for the group told Asempa News that the group has not been served with the injunction and urged members to carry on with the demonstration. The group converged in Accra and trooped to the GNAT hall where they decided to declare the hunger strike but about fifty of them were arrested. Confirming the arrests to Asempa FM, a member of the group from Kumasi, Emmanuel Boateng said they were on their bus miles away from the GNAT premises when the police confronted them. Emmanuel Boateng said they were heading towards the GNAT office when they noticed the police had besieged the whole area so they decided not to go in but stay outside.
