The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has taken over the case in which a 22-year-old boy was allegedly brutalized to death by some police personnel in Krofrom a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the Service, DSP Freeman Tettey, the case has been transferred to the homicide unit of the CID to speed up the process of investigation.

Some policemen were alleged to have brutalized a 22-year-old Richmond Osei Tawiah in Krofrom over a mistaken identity on May 26.

According to eyewitnesses, the police were in hot chase of two armed robbers when they ran into the deceased whilst coming out of a public toilet.

They beat and tasered him till he fell unconscious resulting in his untimely death.

Residents protested calling for the police to be withdrawn from the town. They burnt tyres and blocked the streets in the vicinity.

An autopsy conducted at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital vindicated the police personnel. It said the boy died of a natural cause namely “Congestive Heart Failure.”

But the family of the deceased has rejected the report alleging a cover-up by the police officials and the man behind the autopsy report, Dr Osei Sampene.

Speaking to Joy News, DSP Tettey said “The policemen who are allegedly connected to the case have also been transferred to Accra.”

He remarked the fact the case has been transferred to “Accra does not means investigations will be truncated here.”

Meanwhile, the Police Administration is calling on the people of Ashanti Region to remain calm in the face of seeming increased activities of armed robbers there.

The Administration said it has deployed a number of teams of action units to the region to help bring the situation under control.
