A Police Constable has been shot dead by suspected armed robbers in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.
The incident happened on Sunday night during an exchange of fire between the deceased and a gang of unregistered motorbike riders.
Confirming the incident on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Corporal Godwin Ahianyo, said the deceased was part of a patrol team that bumped into a party of unregistered motorbike riders numbering about 15.
Given previous reports that unregistered motorbikes have been used to rob unsuspecting weekend revelers, the deceased confronted them.
But the band responded with a warning shot ostensibly to scare away the intruding police officer.
According to Corporal Ahianyo, the deceased, sensing danger, shot one of the suspects but they responded in equal measure leading to his death.
One person has been arrested to assist in police investigations, the police PRO said.
Asked if the deceased was not wearing any protective gear on his patrol, Corporal Ahianyo said “we don’t have that kind of bullet-proof gear, [bullet-proof gears] are in the system but they are not sufficient so usually when we are going on patrols we don’t use those protective gears.”
