Police in Kumasi on Thursday dawn arrested four suspected highway robbers including a notorious ex-convict declared wanted by the Greater Accra regional police command.
The gang leader, in his thirties, was released from the Nsawam Medium Prisons two months ago after serving a 7-year jail term for the similar crimes.
The all male male-gang had been operating on the Kumasi-Adankwame-Sunyani highway, terrorizing the traveling public.
Activities of armed robbers have increased on that stretch of road due to the high volume of vehicles plying the route.
The latest attack occurred two weeks ago on the Adankwa-Esaso section of the road when they attacked the traveling public.
The number of vehicles on the road has increased due to ongoing construction works on the Sofoline-Abuakwa Interchange project.
Police Buffalo Unit trailed the robbers who were armed with locally manufactured pistols, machete and knives, in an attempt to rob their latest victim, a white man traveling on the route.
An Opel Astra taxi cab, with registration GT 5662 T and mobile phones used by the suspected robbers have been impounded by the police.
Deputy Public Relations Officer at the Ashanti Regional Police Command, Corporal Godwin Ahianyo says the identities of the suspects are being withheld to enable police arrest other accomplices.
