Two suspected armed robbers who were part of a gang of three which attacked the residence of a forex bureau manager at Dansoman, were killed last night during a shoot-out with the police. One of the robbers died at the scene while the other, who had sought treatment at a private clinic, died on his way to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. The two were identified as Martin Koranteng Egyir, alias Broda, an ex-convict, and Kelvin Ofori Otoo, alias Notorious, who the police say was recently, granted bail by the Human Rights Court, where he was facing charges for car-snatching. The third suspect, believed to have been hit by a bullet, is on the run. A pistol, a dagger, a mask and a rope were retrieved from the robbers. Briefing newsmen in Accra yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, said the police had information that some armed robbers were planning to attack the residence of the forex bureau manager at Dansoman and the police immediately moved and took cover near the said residence. Assisted by her deputy, ACP Christian Yohuno, the Regional Commander said as expected, the three men pulled up in a taxi with registration number GR 6150-10, at about 8:45pm and encountered the police in the shoot-out. She said the armed men abandoned the taxi and attempted to escape on foot but one died close to the house they came to attack. DCOP Atinga said the taxi was found to belong to Egyir, who also owns a storey-building and a ranch at Amasaman. She said the police later had information that Egyir had sought assistance from a friend to take him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment of an injury he had sustained from an accident. According to her, the police responded swiftly and intercepted Egyir and the person who was taking him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. She expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of officials of the private clinic for not alerting the police and indicated that the police would investigate to identify that clinic and deal with it appropriately.
