The Northern Regional Police Command has stepped up checks on Accra-bound vehicles from the region for guns and other offensive weapons. This follows reports that some youth in the area are amassing weapons and warriors to come to Accra to battle each other. The suspected combat readiness is in reaction to the killing of three young men at Abgogbloshie in clashes believed to be between Abudu and Andani youth using NDC/NPP as a veil to cover the actual precursor of the violence. Last Tuesday’s violent clashes was said to be a turf war between NDC and NPP supporters. But analysts say there was certainly more than fighting for space and that the disturbances had chieftaincy undertones. Speaking to Joy News on measures being put in place to prevent people from moving to Accra to disturb the peace, the Northern Regional Police Commander, said the police were on the look out for mass travelers, especially the youth to Accra. ACP John Awuni said the police would not entertain any misbehavior in the area and cautioned against acts of indiscipline. “I just returned from Tolon where we heard one of the boys (killed in Accra comes) from and the place is calm. We’ve gone to Yendi and we are talking to some of the leaders of both factions to consider it as something that should not degenerate into full scale violence in which innocent lives will be lost,” he added. Meanwhile the Concerned Citizens of Tamale is appealing to the youth not to allow themselves to be used by self-seeking to politicians to violent commit crimes. Spokesperson for the group, Basharu Alhassan Dabali told Joy News it was important for the youth to exercise maximum restraint and not take the law into the own hands. He stressed the need for the security agencies to be allowed to tackle the matter.
