Police in the Brong-Ahafo Region have directed a constable who was responsible for guarding an armed robbery suspect who escaped from custody to produce him within 10 days or face punishment.
The suspect was arrested and handed over to police after he was nearly lynched for robbing a shop at Abesim, a suburb of Sunyani on Monday.
The suspect and his accomplice who is on the run allegedly robbed a female attendant and others of the day's sales, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets.
"They were gun-wielding so there was nothing my wife could do but to hand them over her sales," Kweku Wilson, husband of one shopkeeper who was robbed said.
The victims are aggrieved as they say a 17-year-old boy risk his life to aid in the arrest of the suspected robber. They fear the teenager's life is in danger now that the suspect has escaped.
Kweku Wilson told Joy News in an interview they are traumatized by the development.
"Now the fear is we don't know where he is and we are worried he is going to come back. We demand an investigation, otherwise, they will have to protect us because I am not sure we are safe," the terrified husband said.
Meanwhile, police in the Brong Ahafo Region have assured that they will do all it takes to re-arrest the suspect.
