A police man was hit by a stray bullet at Nakpanduri on Tuesday March 23, over a struggle between an irate youth and the police in the area.According to Citi News, the Nakpanduri police and an angry mob from the community struggled over a vehicle which was impounded on suspicion that it was carrying weapons to the troubled Bunkpurugu Yunyoo district.
Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the news to Citi FM said the vehicle was impounded upon a tip-off and was escorted to the Nakpanduri police station where the angry mob attempted to take over the vehicle.“Because we suspected that arms and ammunition were in the car, probably they did that to free the car, which resulted in the shooting incident,” he said. The police responded by firing to scare the mob away. In the exchange, a bullet from the mob hit one of the police personnel.
About 19 suspects in addition to the driver and his mate have been picked up by the police and transferred to the Tamale Regional police Command for interrogation.
“We have arrested 19 suspects; we have asked that they should be transported to Tamale for interrogation and it is only after proper interrogations that we can proceed with our investigations” he added.Meanwhile, Ebenezer Tetteh said that the policeman who sustained the gun shot injury is in stable condition and is receiving treatment at the Nalerigu Baptist health centre.Source: Citifmonline
