The Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed says that political corruption is troubling and notes that focusing on it does not mean other sectors are free from corruption.
He explained that political corruption must be addressed because politicians have the unique authority to hold others accountable for corrupt practices.
Murtala Mohammed noted that the President, through the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, can decide who gets prosecuted and controls the security agencies and investigative authorities, except for the Office of the Special Prosecutor.
Speaking on JoyNews AM show, Mr Mohammed said that “Even if the office of the special prosecutor finishes its investigations, it takes the exclusive right of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, the minister who is appointed by the president, to determine whether to go ahead and prosecute or not. So, when politicians are corrupt, it is worrying, and the problem we have in this country is that some politicians are fantastically corrupt, so whoever engaged in corrupt acts ought to be dealt with.”
Murtala Mohammed stated that National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Mahama, has repeatedly indicated that he will ensure anyone whose actions or inactions cause financial loss to the state will be held accountable.
He said Mr. Mahama has also warned future appointees of under his administration not to think that his determination to prosecute those who engage in corrupt acts will be limited to members of the administration that precedes his and that his appointees will be insulated.
