Academic work on the various polytechnics across the country remains grounded as the Polytechnic Teachers Association of Ghana strike continues unabated.
POTAG members have been out of the classroom for two weeks demanding payment of their revised salaries under the singe spine salary structure.
Negotiations by the Fair Wages Commission, National Labour Commission and Education Ministry have not softened the stands of the teachers who say they will only return when they see the monies in their account. Students who are most affected say they want the issue resolved as soon as possible.
Joy FM’s Hannah Odame visited the Accra Polytechnic campus where some of the students expressed their dissatisfaction at the turn of events. Some students said that they had not been given any information by officialdom as to the next line of action.
Some students said that their budgets had been thrown out of gear due to the strike because they budgeted for a semester which has now been unduly prolonged due to the strike action.
According to Luv FM’s Prince Appiah, the situation at Kumasi Polytechnic is not much different. Some students revealed that from outside Kumasi so leaving campus to their houses would be at a great cost.
Sky FM’s Kuuku Aban reported that the Sunyani Polytechnic lecturers were locked in a meeting which sought to reinforce the decision that the teachers will return to the classroom only when the new salaries reflect in their accounts.
POTAG embarked on the strike two weeks ago in protest of what they say were deliberate delays by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to migrate their members onto the Single Spine Salary Structure, as agreed upon by the two parties in an earlier meeting after the group had called off an initial strike.
