Members of the Society of Private Medical and Dental Practitioners in the Ashanti region have declared their unwillingness to participate in a pilot Capitation exercise under the National Health Insurance Scheme. They would rather continue serving their clients based on the existing contract with the National Health Insurance Authority.Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, the chairman of the group, Dr. Emmanuel Osei kicked against the Capitation scheme. He said “Capitation in its present proposed form will adversely affect the quality of care that we provide to our clients.” He explained that the reason is because of the restrictions placed on drugs for their clients in the region as compared to other regions.Dr. Emmanuel Osei thus recommended that all drugs should be taken off the capitation. He further stated that “all chronic and degenerative diseases must be excluded from the Capitation. Maternal healthcare, antenatal clinic, delivery and post natal care should not be part of Capitation.”
