Professor Emeritus Ivor G. Wilks has passed away

Professor Emeritus Ivor G Wilks; father of David Amanor of the British Broadcasting Corporation, has passed away.

The sad occurence was on Wednesday, 7 October 2014 after a long illness. He was born on July 19, 1928.

Prof Wilks was instrumental in setting up the institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon around the time of independence, and chronicled the rise of the Asante Kingdom in the 19^th century through original and far-reaching research.

His most famous work “Asante in the 19^th Century” is still a standard text book today for many students of African history around the world.

He’s the author of over 178 published works mostly about Ghana, including "Forests of Gold", "Wa and the Wala", and "Akwamu – A Study of the Rise and Fall of a West African Empire".

Details of burial arrangements will be announced in due time.
