The chief prosecutor in the famous Mabey and Johnson bribery case in the United Kingdom has hinted at the possibility of a legal action against individuals named in the scandal.
Mr John Hardy says the fact that the company has been dealt with by the UK laws does not rule out any legal action either in Ghana or in the UK against the individuals named in the scandal.
The multinational company Mabey and Johnson was fined UKÂŁ 6,6 million by the Southwark Crown Court in the UK for paying bribes to some top officials in some countries including Ghana in the 1980s and 90s.
The company pleaded guilty at the court and said it paid the monies to secure contracts in those countries.
The issue triggered intense uproar in Ghana forcing former Health Minister Dr Sipa Yankey – who was also cited in the scandal – to resign.
The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has already concluded preliminary investigations into the matter and is expected to hold public hearings starting 15 March, 2010.
Mr Hardy, who spoke to Joy News in an exclusive interview in Accra, said the matter still lives on.
The UK attorney is in the country to deliver public lectures with support from the Danquah Institute, a political think-tank.
The first lecture themed “Protecting Ghana and Ghana’s Emerging Financial Offshore Centre from Money Laundering,” will touch mainly on money laundering in Ghana as an oil producing country.
Mr Hardy will deliver his second and final at the K.A. Busia Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon, under the theme: “International Corruption - How Ghana can Collaborate with the UK and Others to Beat it.”
