Christian Atsu has vowed to entertain Newcastle United supporters during his season-long loan at St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old made his Toon debut in the 6-0 thrashing at Queens Park Rangers this week, and is eager for some game-time in England after being restricted to just a handful of appearances with AFC Bournemouth and Everton after previous loans from Chelsea.

Geordie fans love to be entertained by skillful players, and Atsu feels he fits the bill. He told the Chronicle: “Football is sometimes about entertaining people. You win but you also need to make your fans happy.

“The African style of playing is about entertaining people but you want to win as well. My intention is to help the club. In many ways really, not just scoring but also creating chances.

“I want to get along with the players and create some team spirit. With my style of play, I believe I can help the team and I am working hard to do that.”

Atsu won the goal of the tournament for his wonder strike at the African Cup of Nations in 2015 against Guinea.

After bursting down the right-wing he then cut inside and lashed home from long range with his left foot.

Now he’d love to do something similar at St James’, he said: “If I score that type of goal in front of Newcastle fans, I’d go crazy.

“I love playing and I love playing in front of fans. It gives me a lot of confidence, that’s why I am happy to be here.”

Atsu is hoping to make the most of his loan deal at Newcastle but first wants to prove himself before looking too far ahead.

He said: “I need to concentrate on each and every training session.

“Before I even think of staying at the club I have put myself forward and look at the opportunity. For me, I am starting again.

“I’m trying to repay something and create my future. This is a big opportunity for me to work hard and I am confident that it can be a good time.”

And when asked what he knew about United before he arrived, he said: “I knew they had been playing in the Premier League and they are a big club in England.

“They have a history. I have tried to read more about them.”

Atsu was close to opening his account for the Magpies on Tuesday night when he cracked the bar with Newcastle 6-0 up at Loftus Road.

Had he scored, it could have been the goal that made history for United to make it the highest ever scoreline away from home.

He said: “I almost scored, but I was very happy with the win.

“When the team scores it’s good and all that is important is the team winning so I was very happy to win the game.”

Newcastle go into the game against Wolves on a roll after winning the last six games in all competitions.

But Atsu wants to help manage expectations at United, he said: “We can’t speak about promotion just yet because it’s too early.

“There have only been seven games so far and we have to keep our focus. We must try to win every game.”
