About 80 percent of health facilities accredited by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to provide services under the pilot capitation project do not have qualified biomedical laboratory scientists. This was revealed by Prince Sodoke Amuzu, President of the Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists at a meeting in Kumasi. Whilst looking forward to Parliament’s early passage of a bill to regulate the sector, the Association, in conjunction with the Health Ministry has established an Allied Health Regulatory Taskforce to begin the regulatory process. According to Prince Amuzu, some laboratories in Kumasi run by quacks have been picked up with the support of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). He is worried the unqualified medical laboratory scientists are engaged in the training of more quack technicians and issuing fake certificates. He told Luv News the list of health facilities involved will be published next month in line with the 'name and shame' strategy adopted by the Association. “Now that we’ve done all the grounds work; we’ve gone round the places, talked to people, investigated the places with the help of the BNI and now we have a master list which we are now consulting the lawyers and when we have the clearance, next month we issue it, because we don’t have to wait for Ghanaians to be misdiagnosed and killed before we act”, Prince Amuzu stated. He is hoping the Association will be consulted in the review of the NHIS capitation project in the Ashanti region to help instill quality health delivery through professional laboratory practice. The public has also been cautioned against patronizing services of laboratories without verifying their professional accreditation.
