The Executive Director of the Centre for Economic and Policy Analysis (CEPA), Dr. Joe Abbey has said that the drop in inflation to a single digit will not put food on the table in Ghanaian homes. His assertion was in reaction to the State of the Nation Address on the Economy delivered by the president in Parliament on Thursday. The CEPA Executive Director rather urged government to endeavour to materialize jobs for the Ghanaian youth, now that oil has been discovered in western region. The proceeds, he articulated, can be invested in projects for the youth. President Atta Mills’ speech on the State of the Nation Address acknowledged the drop in inflation from the middle of 2009 till December last year. But experts have predicted a rise in inflation as a result of increased prices of petroleum products which often affects the prices of commodities. President Mills’ indication of the economy graduating from the ‘theoretical’ middle income status was also highlighted in the address. However, Dr. Abbey insisted that more important is the need to create more jobs for the growing human resource base in the country otherwise, civil unrest in places like Libya may be replicated in Ghana. “Government should be able to leave a legacy for the youth such that they will build and grow the economy,” he stated. Dr. Abbey was disappointed in government’s snail-pace approach to projects in the country. He therefore challenged government to endeavour to utilize the knowledge of the youth in speeding up the progress of these projects. Dr. Abbey however expressed satisfaction in the president’s speech but says there is more to be done. Story by Maame Esi Nyamekye Thompson/Adom News
