The flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom has called on fishermen across the country to reject politicians who only bring them outboard motors and other fishing equipment in election year and abandon them after they win.
According to him, some politicians see fishermen as ‘fools’ and only think about them during election periods.
Dr Nduom made the comment at Bortianor in the Greater Accra region during a durbar to outdoor the PPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Ngleshie-Amanfrom constituency, Rev Fred Nii Adjetey Larbie.
He indicated that, the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) which enjoys much support from the fishing communities have turned their backs on them.
Rather, Dr. Nduom said, the Mahama led government has allowed Koreans, Chinese nationals and others to come to Ghana to harvest fingerlings when they know fishing is the mainstay of people along the coast.
‘’Since you voted for John Mahama what has he done to improve your lives, has he bothered to come find out the challenges you go through? It is election year so they are bringing you outboard motors, fishing nets, etc., and once you finish voting, they will be done with you’ he stated.
"If the government truly cares for your welfare they will not look on while foreigners destroy the ocean bed when they know the sea is where your livelihoods come from. This clearly shows that the government has nothing better for you’’ Dr. Nduom added.
For his part, Rev Larbie appealed the people of the constituency to help him win the seat to bring development to the area.
On behalf of all the chiefs and fishermen at the event, Abusua Nii Okai, bemoaned the pair trawling in their waters.
He appealed to government to as a matter addressed the issue to bring some respite to fishermen in the area.
Abusua Nii Okai pledged their support for Dr. Nduom noting that, he is the only one who can truly fight for the rights of fishermen.
Dignitaries present included the Aplaku Mantse, Langma Mantse, Bortainor Wolomo, Bortainor Abusuapanyin, Oshie Mankrado, Bortainor Chief Fisherman among others.
