Renowned lawyer and prominent member of the Ghana Bar Association, Ekow Awoonor has died Monday, Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

A source at the Bar confirmed his death and noted that the distinguished lawyer died of post-surgery complications while in a U.S hospital.

Ekow N. Awoonor who was the Principal of the Awoonor Law Consultancy firm, holds a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Ghana, Legon (1971) and a Masters of Law from Temple School of Law, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States (1974).

He was enrolled as a member of the Ghana Bar in 1974 and was a member of the International Bar Association.

The late Ekow Awoonor  had extensive experience in Corporate and Investment Law serving a client base of mainly foreign-owned companies.

He was a consultant and resource person to the Ghana Stock Exchange for its training programme for brokers and investment advisors. He conducted several financial seminars in collaboration with Databank Financial Services Limited on such topics as stock exchange listing, venture capital, finance leasing portfolio management. 

He has offered legal advice to clients taking equity in various financial institutions such as merchant banks, discount houses, finance leasing companies and venture capital companies. He has served as legal counsel for a number of private companies which went public and were listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

He was a Consultant for Development Partners Limited, a group of Canadian and Ghanaian Consultants specialising in Capital Markets and Development issues. He was recently appointed by UNIDO Ghana to advise on the implications of GATT for developing economies in sub-region.

Ekow Awoonor was also a director of SSB Bank Limited for several years before it became SG-SSB Bank.
