The Upper East Regional Security Counsel has proposed an incentive package for informants who would expose people with illegal arms in the region.
Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo, said the council is hopeful the initiative would help retrieve many illegal weapons from residents especially in the Bawku Municipality.
“…they proposed GHc80 but we thought that it is on the low side, so I am proposing that it should be GHc2,000”, he said.
According to him, the initiative has been forwarded to the Interior Minister, Cletus Avoka for approval.
However, Mr Woyongo stressed that the proposed amount would only be released after the police or military have retrieved the arms.
He has assured Ghanaians that anyone who would provide any such information would be protected.
“In fact we’re very conscious of that, and we’re sensitizing the security men on the ground to protect their sources of information”.
Meanwhile, it is not clear when the initiative would take effect.
