The 2016/17 Ghana Rugby Club Championship (GRCC) kicked off in Cape Coast on Saturday with a match between Griffons RFC and Western Cheetahs RFC, followed by the second encounter between UCC Spartans RFC and newly formed Dennis Foundation Sporting Club on Wednesday 23 November.
The 2016/17 GRCC will be played on a round robin basis in two pools, with the winners and runners-up in each pool going through to the semi finals.
In Pool One four teams will compete in Accra, namely Conquerors SC (winners of the 2015/16 GRCC), Cosmos Buffaloes RFC, Dansoman Hurricanes RFC and Idas Sports.
The second pool in the CentWest Zone will be played between six teams, namely Griffons RFC, Dennis Foundation SC, Lions RFC, Stallions RFC, UCC Spartans RFC and Western Cheetahs RFC.
Three new teams namely Dennis Foundation SC, Lions RFC and Stallions RFC will take part in the 2016/17 GRCC that indicates a positive growth of Rugby in Ghana.
Griffons RFC won their match against Western Cheetahs by 52 to 6. The midweek match was won by Dennis Foundation 26 to 5 against the university team of UCC Spartans.
In Pool B the second round of matches will once again be played at the Robert Mensah Stadium on Saturday 26 November 2016 in Cape Coast between two new teams, Lions RFC and Stallions RFC, while Griffons RFC will take on UCC Spartans. Kick-off time is scheduled for 11am.
In Accra the first matches will kick off at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday 26 November 2016 with much awaited matches between Conquerors SC, the winners of the 2015/16 GRCC, and arch rivals Cosmos Buffalos RFC.
In the second match Dansoman Hurricanes RFC, runners-up in 2015/16, will take on IDAS Sports RFC. The first match will kick-off at 11am and entrance is free.
