Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ms Benedicta Naana Biney has called on school heads to act firmly to maintain discipline in the schools. They should ensure that students’ conduct conformed to the rules of acceptable moral behavior. She said it was by doing this that quality education could be achieved, noting there could not be academic excellence when students were indiscipline and morally bankrupt. Ms Naana Biney was addressing the opening session of the 14th annual congress of the Ashanti Regional Students Representative Council (ARSRC) at Jamasi in the Sekyere South District on Monday. The week-long meeting is being held under the theme: “Indiscipline is a threat to quality education and national development.” The acting Director-General reminded students about the need to use the appropriate channels of communication to seek redress of their grievances. They should reject any temptation to resort to violence and acts of vandalism. Ms Naana Biney also encouraged school management and staff to exhibit high level of discipline to serve as good examples to students. The Vice President of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS), Ms Mary Adu-Tiwaah, expressed disquiet about the growing lawlessness in schools in the region and said this must end. She said students’ riots, truancy and occult practices were on the rise, pointing out that these used to be uncommon in the region. Ms Adu-Tiwaah, therefore, urged the Council to take up the challenge of educating students to submit to authority and control. Master Samuel Owusu Amoako Kusi, President of the ARSRC, said a number of measures had been put in place to check waywardness among students. These include organizing guidance and counselling, excursions and quiz competitions among others.
