NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, says there is the need to encourage humour in Ghanaian politics, insisting he finds nothing wrong with the mimicking of a slip by President Mills.
The Youth wing of the NPP on Saturday, December 4 launched the “ECOMINI WEAR” as part of its strategy to raise funds for the party’s activities and programmes such as a mass registration of first time voters of the party.
President Mills in his maiden State of the Nation address, slipped on the word Economy, substituting that for “Economi” which soon became a household word and found its way onto mobile phones as ringtones.
The NPP youth wing’s action has angered some followers of the government who say the gag is in bad taste and politically incorrect.
But according to Sir John, he is very amazed at the reaction of the National Organiser of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Yaw Boateng-Gyan that it is an embarrassment to the NPP because he (Sir John) believes it is just for comic relief.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Sir John revealed that he has even bought one of the T-shirts with the inscription “”COCOA ASE KORASENI/BROADEN YOUR HORIZON” because it appeals to him. That was also a reference made of Sir John himself by a deputy minister of Tourism in the president administration, Kobby Acheampong.
He added that branding the move by the youth wing of the NPP as unfortunate and disgraceful to the party will rather increase patronage of the T-shirt.
He noted that he would have condemned the actions of the Youth wing if he found it insulting of the President.
Some of the T-shirts came with inscriptions such as: “WHO BORN DOG” BY DR. BOOM; “I DON’T CARRY THE WATER ON MY HEAD” BY PROF. DO LITTLE; “GREEDY BASTARDS” BY DR. BOOM; “I WILL REDUCE FUEL PRICES DRASTICALLY” BY PRESIDENT MILLS; AND “COCOA ASE KORASENI/BROADEN YOUR HORIZON” BY KOBBY ACHEAMPONG AND “KILL THE JUDGES LIKE CATS” BY DR. KWABENA ADJEI among others.
