Two military officers are under investigation after allegedly assaulting traders at the National Arts Centre over the weekend. Lance Corporal Larbi Ansah and Corporal Kabah Titus spent two nights in the Ministries police cells after the incident, in which they repeatedly hit a trader on the head with a wooden artifact. Kwame Tuffuor, a 25-year-old trader was left with serious head injuries after the two soldiers allegedly kicked and beat him up with a work of art from his mother’s stall last weekend. According to Tuffuor, it all started when he tried to retrieve his wooden carving one of the soldiers had taken into a corner. Tuffuor said it was 5:30pm and just about time for him to close when the soldier picked the artifact. The trader then walked up to the military man to ask him to return the art work. But whilst walking away from the soldier after serving the notice, one of the soldiers called him up and started hitting him on the head with the wooden material. “I started bleeding profusely,” he said. The soldiers were walking before some workers around apprehended them and sent them to the Ministries Police Station. Joy News’ Kobby Graham was shown pictures taken immediately after the incident the traders, revealing the extent of Tuffuor’s injuries, as well as those of an unidentified elderly trader who was allegedly slapped by one of the soldiers when he tried to help Tuffuor. According to the Chairman of the centre’s Arts & Crafts Dealers Association, Abu Adamu, the soldiers had been trying to extort money from another trader earlier in the day for sporting a Mohawk haircut. The Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Armed Forces said it was unaware of the case. Director of the Department, Colonel E.W.K. Nibo however explained the soldiers’ fate would depend on whether or not they were acting on instructions of the command. “Once they’ve been arrested by the police and that they were not sent officially on duty to do anything and went there on their own, it is the military command’s directive that you face the music,” Col.
