Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Ahmed Mustapha has revealed that the newly constructed Cape Coast Stadium will be ready on January 31 2016

The construction which started in October 2012, was being handled by Chinese firm IPPR International Engineering Corporation after the Ghanaian and Chinese governments signed an MOU for a US$30-million grant.

The Central Regional Director of the National Sports Stadium, Kweku Abedu Wilson, had already revealed to Asempa Sports that the 15,000-capacity stadium will have a natural grass football turf, two outdoor basketball courts, tennis and table tennis arena, outdoor volleyball and handball court, a boxing training gym, three parking lots, eight runway tracks, a press conference hall and a media room”.

He again revealed that the new edifice  will have a medical room, an audience emergency room, two referee rooms, three management rooms, three facility storages, two security rooms, two VIP lobby halls, four athletic lounges, 22 guest rooms with LED electronic display, audio amplification system and a number of track and field sports devices.

In an exclusive interview with Asempa Sports, Dr. Mustapha disclosed that the contractor will hand over the facilities to the ministry and National Sports Authority on the last day of next month.

“From January 31, the contractor will finally hand over the facilities to us to pave way for the handing over and taking over ceremony,” he told Asempa Sports

 “And after that, a particular date will be set by Government for the opening ceremony to officially announce that the facilities are ready for use.”

“What amused me is that not only football facility is there but some sporting disciplines will have their facilities to train with.”

Now, those involved in sporting activities in Central Region can boast of the Robert Mensah Stadium and the newly constructed one.

The two most rivalled clubs in Cape Coast, Ebusua Dwarfs and Venom Vipers are expected to move from Robert Mensah to adopt the newly constructed one as their home grounds when next season kicks-off.

In the midst of all this, one question lingers: “Will the stadium be named after late former Ghana president John Evans Atta Mills as it was rumored some months ago?”
