The Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) wants President John Mahama to show clear concrete measures as well as a commitment to address the perennial water shortage and power cuts in his State of the Nation address to Parliament Tuesday.
Head of the Centre Dr. Steve Manteaw is convinced governments have, in over a-decade-and-a-half now, known the problem as well as the solution to inadequate water supply to the citizenry but have lacked the commitment to make the necessary investments to solve the problems.
According to him, a report done on the challenges facing the water sector in the country shows a deficit in investment to the tune of one billion dollars.
Dr. Manteaw challenged President Mahama to take a bold step in resolving the problems in the water sector
The country has been hit in recent months by erratic power and water supply despite many assurances by government spokespersons and officials of state institutions that the situation was going to get better.
And with the economy challenged in many respects, concerns have been raised as to whether the president would address the challenges facing the water and power sectors.
Speaking to Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh, the head of ISODEC said sufficient supply of water and power is fundamental to the growth of the economy and must be attended to.
"If power supply is not reliable you are unable to produce enough and export enough to shore up the economy," he explained.
Quoting a report done by international organizations on how Ghana can resolve her erratic water supplies, Dr Manteaw said government needs to invest an amount of a billion dollars into the sector.
While he does not expect President John Mahama to announce new policies in the water and power sectors, he hoped the country would be able to get things done right.
