Striking polytechnic teachers in Kumasi, Sunyani and Takoradi have refused to return to the classroom despite a directive for them to do so.
The teachers, who have been on strike protesting their migration onto the
Single Spine Salary Structure, were directed by their national leaders to return to the classroom whilst discussion with the Fair Wages and Salary Commission continues.
However teachers at the Kumasi Polytechnic are yet to decide when to return to the classroom.
Its Chairman Edmund Oppong Peprah told Joy News: “The decision to go on strike was taken by POTAG in Kumasi Polytechnic, therefore, if we will go back to the classroom, in the same way it would be a decision taken by POTAG in Kumasi.”
He said the local chapter is convening an emergency meeting on Monday to take a decision, insisting, “nobody can direct us to go back to teach if we deem it not appropriate”.
The situation is not different from other striking institutions. At Sunyani Polytechnic, for instance, correspondent Kuuku Abban told Joy News the Sunyani campus is virtually empty because of the absence of the teachers.
Ebenezer Afenyie Dadzie reports from the Takoradi Polytechnic that final year students who are scheduled to complete school in May this year are anxious for the return of the lecturers.
The local POTAG Chairman, Samuel Mensah said they are likely to call off the strike after a planned meeting today.
