Sudan gives $335m for victims of 1998 bombings

The US says it has received $335m (£243m) from Sudan to compensate victims of the 1998 bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and a warship two years later.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the payment - the terms of which were agreed last year - heralded a new chapter in relations between Washington and Khartoum.

The embassy bombings, as well as the attack in Yemen on the USS Cole in 2000, were carried out by al-Qaeda.

Sudan had been accused by the US of sponsoring terrorism. But since the ousting of its former leader Omar al-Bashir two years ago, agreements have been reached to restore ties and wind down US sanctions.
