The 2010 National Best Teacher, Kingsley Akum, has appealed to the government to re-examine the remuneration package of teachers. He nontheless expressed his gratitude to the government for recognizing the role teachers play in national development.
An elated Kingsley Akum who received a personal award package of GH¢60,000 to build a house, plus a laptop and an internet modem plus a set of computer and printer for his school, sang the praises of his colleague teachers all over the country for the good work they continue to do for the nation.
He intimated that “a country which fails to recognize the selfless devotion of its heroes and heroines… is not worth dying for “
He lauded the idea behind the teachers’ awards but called for salaries of teachers all over the country to be increased across board as a sign of appreciation for their hard work.
“If as a nation we continue to pay lip service to the demands of teachers we will be marching into a pit because teachers make the child who constitutes the future of the nation.”
Kingsley Akum who is based in Kumasi entreated teachers to live exemplary lives so as to be emulated by the young ones.
The National Teachers Awards was instituted in 1995 to recognize teachers who go out of their way to excel at their posts despite overbearing limitations.
