Audio By Carbonatix
A security analyst, Dr Ishmael Norman, says there is nothing wrong with the Minority leader's request for the trail of the yet-to-be-named individuals in leaked audio to be aired on national television.
On Thursday, July 13, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson said the minority is pushing for the court proceedings on the plot to oust the IGP to be aired for all citizens to witness the event as it unfolds.
His petition subsequently generated mixed reaction from the political sphere in the country.
However, Dr Norman in an interview on Joy FM's Newsnite said there was no law that prohibits such issues from being televised therefore it should not be an issue.
"There is nothing wrong, the 1962 or so national secrecy Act does not prohibit public inquiry about events that affect the national security so I don’t see why it should not be done,” he said.
His comments were in response to the question of whether it was safe to televise an issue of national importance on live television.
He explained that the country was currently not the best to invest in because of some of these security issues therefore televising this will be a way to resolve the issue.
“Considering the fact that Ghana is now not the best country to invest in due to our security situation. I think the citizens have a right to know what is happening so that we can all toil the same line and bring Ghana to its former prominence of being one of the safest places in Africa," he added.
About the leaked tape
The said secret audio details an alleged plot by persons suspected to be high-ranking officials of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), and a top member of the Ghana Police Service to remove the current Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare from office ahead of the 2024 elections.
The yet-to-be named individuals involved in the recorded conversation expressed frustration over the IGP’s alleged reluctance to align the Police Service’s activities with the interests of the ruling party.
They raised concerns about his leadership style and rumoured association with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I know there are others who are also good for this position. If I don’t get it and this man is changed and those people that we think are our men get it, [I will be happy]… Because we need to break this 8. That is important, we need to break the 8… Because I wouldn’t want a doctor to become the flagbearer and then we lose the elections,” one of the men who is reportedly a police officer in the audio is heard saying.
As a result, they concluded that achieving the NPP’s ‘Breaking the 8’ agenda, would be impossible with Dampare as the head of the police.
