For some time now, the sounds of cockcrows have been replaced by the sounds of gunfire to signal the start of the day in Bawku.
A tensed and fearful atmosphere has overshadowed Bawku due to violent clashes between security agents and some residents of the town.
Adding fuel to the fire, during the early hours of Wednesday, February 15, the overlord of the Mamprugu traditional area, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sherigah II, enskinned a new Chief for Bawku.
This was an alarming action that attracted attention nationwide and moved government to address the incident through the Minister of Information. Government said the enskinment is illegal and a threat to national security.
