Black Satellites and Vision FC winger, Edmund Asante, has described his omission from Ghana’s U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad as a blessing in disguise.
Ghana failed to qualify for the semi-final stage of the U-20 AFCON after losing to host nation Egypt on penalties.
Speaking to JoySports after scoring in Vision FC's 3-1 win over Asante Kotoko in their final game of the season, Asante expressed satisfaction with his performance and how his season unfolded.
“I think when we came on the pitch, I think I was a bit nervous. For me, I’m not fit, so I was thinking of how to change the game. We were playing them and later on they scored, so we were under pressure. So I was thinking of how to make something for the team and prove myself and God willing I got a goal by pushing myself,” he said.
He added that despite the disappointment of missing out on the AFCON squad, returning to his club and playing regularly helped him rediscover his form.
“Me being dropped from the U-20 AFCON squad, I was not really sad. But then I was happy coming back to my team, doing my best and playing all the matches that were left, showing how good I am despite the mistake they made by dropping me from the squad,” Asante stated.
Looking ahead, the winger admitted he is uncertain about his next move but remains hopeful.
“The season is done, I have no idea what is ahead of me. But I’m just hoping for the best,to get somewhere better and get more name and do better,” he said.
Asante also revealed he is unlikely to feature for Ghana in the upcoming WAFU tournament due to fitness concerns.
“This WAFU, I’m not fit so I don’t think I can play,” he concluded
