Students of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cape Coast have initiated series of projects to give legal education to communities in the Central Region.
The purpose of the project is to enlighten residents on their rights and responsibilities under the 1992 Constitution and other legislations governing the country.
In support of the outreach program is a television program, the ‘Mmra Television show’, on a local Television Network in Cape Coast, Coastal Television.
The ‘Mmra’ TV show has run for over 14 months bringing the law closer to the people through interactions using the media.
Facilitator of the Project, Edwin Coleman, a law student, told Joy News the need for such a legal education cannot be overemphasized.
“The essence of the project is to educate the general public on their rights and responsibilities hence this community Outreach Project would bring the law closer to the people or at the doorstep of the people,” he said.
The Mmra Community Outreach Project Coordinator intimated that there was the need for communities in the region to benefit from the Faculty of Law that has been established at the University of Cape Coast.
“This project is meant to let the people of Ghana get closer to the law. It is an educative platform where legal concerns of people can be addressed by seasoned lawyers and legal scholars. The target population is the rural dwellers who do not have the opportunity and access to any form of information about the general laws in Ghana. Indeed it is ‘the law on the street’”.
Edwin Coleman further stressed that the Outreach Project is not meant for law students to render legal advice but to offer basic understanding which students have acquired to help society.
