Police in the Upper East region have begun investigations into attempted assault on New Patriotic Party Chairman Paul Afoko, General Secretary, Kwabena Agyapong and the party’s regional organizer, Jerry Asamani.

The three had to seek police protection yesterday after some youth attempted attacking them physically.

Mr Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong are on a tour in the three regions of the North. But that meeting was rumoured to be a campaign against Parliamentary aspirants believed to be supporting flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.

Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Thomas Agbanyo, says they have invited some of the youth leaders for questioning.

Meanwhile the Upper East NPP chairman, Adams Mahama is accusing Mr Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong of among other things, failing to inform regional executives of their visit.

He told Joy News' Kwakye Afreh-Nuamah it was only fair that he, as the chairman of the party in the region, be informed prior to the arrival of the National chairman and the General Secretary.

"I feel like weeping. They were coming to my region and did not think it was fair to inform me before coming," he asked.

He also dismissed allegations the youth attempted to beat up the national chairman and General Secretary.

He said the youth were only protesting the disunity within the party and were not violent.

"I don't know anything about these attacks.

"They think there is no unity. It was just a protest to tell the chairman and General Secretary to work together with other national executives."

Communications Director of the party, Nana Akomea said they will launch an immediate investigation into the matter.

He said the party will take "swift remedial action" after investigations have been concluded.

"If party supporters are so much disconnected with the party Chair and General Secretary to the extent of them disrupting a meeting called by the two, it is an extraordinarily strange development and the party will investigate it," he indicated.
