The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Professor Akwasi Asebere-Ameyaw, has urged the government to provide resources for the total development of the university to train adequate teachers to fill the vacancies in the classrooms. He was speaking at a ceremony at the weekend at which 155 students, comprising 53 females and 102 males were matriculated for the Department of Akan-Nzema Education to pursue various Ghanaian language courses for Bachelor of Arts Degrees at the newly opened Ajumako Campus. “It is our desire to relocate the Centre for Continuing Education to this campus to provide in-service training for GES staff and the large number of University lecturers who require pedagogical skills for effective delivery,” he said. Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said the Ajumako campus being the fourth, would eventually become a College of Languages Education, adding that, gradually the Faculty of Languages Education would be transferred to Ajumako. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the vision of the UEW is to establish a model Languages Education centre in Africa where languages in Ghana and major languages of the world would be taught and researched into. He also appealed to individuals and organizations with the requisite resources to put up housing facilities to accommodate students and staff that may have to live out of the campus. The Chairman of the Governing Council of the University, Dr Emmanuel Kenneth Andoh, expressed the hope that the inauguration of the Ajumako Campus would bring to the various communities and the district tremendous opportunities for self-development.
