UG suspends proposed utility charges

Students of the University of Ghana Legon will now heave a sigh of relief following a decision by authorities of the university not to bill students with proposed utility charges in next academic year.

A statement released by the school’s SRC President, Esinam Afi Seade, said the decision was taken by the management following a University Council meeting on June 30.

The Union of Ghana Students had threatened to resist any proposed bills passed on to students.

The Power Ministry is reported to have communicated to the University authorities that government is discontinuing charging students in public institutions utility bills.

Proposed charges of GH¢2,326.00 for residential students and GH¢922.00 for non-residents were earlier projected as utility charges for the students as part of efforts to clear huge debts owed utility companies.

In the light of this, students are only required to pay their respective residential and academic fees from the start of the 2016/2017 academic year which effectively begins on Wednesday, August, 17, 2016.
