Universal Merchant Bank (UMB), has awarded a full scholarship to Jessica Ayeley Quaye, the overall best student in the 2015 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This was at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Distinction Awards to recognize the top performing students in the 2015 WASSCE.
The full scholarship will cater for Jessica’s tuition, accommodation and books for the entire duration of her university programme. She was also presented with a brand new laptop and some souvenirs from UMB.
Two other students, Ruth Ewura-Ama Awudzi and Danielle Amo-Mensah who were the second and third highest scorers in the 2015 WASSCE respectively, also received a laptop each and some souvenirs from UMB.
All three of the girls were students of Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast.
Chief Executive Officer of UMB, John Awuah said UMB is honored to partner with the WAEC to reward outstanding students, adding that he is particularly proud that all three winners are girls.
He also congratulated Wesley Girls High School for producing all the three top winners.
Awuah recalled UMB also supported the overall best WASSCE student for last year, Hassan Michail, who would not have gone into the university because of financial constraints but for the intervention of UMB.
Hassan Michail is currently studying at the KNUST as a result of UMB’s intervention.
“The story of Hassan is why we are committed to this partnership and why I personally look forward to continuing this partnership”, Awuah said.
Speaking on behalf of her fellow award winners, this year’s overall best winner, Jessica Ayeley Quaye expressed her appreciation to UMB and to the WAEC Endowment Fund for the support, and promised to not rest on her laurels.
Among the dignitaries present at the event included the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Mr Jacob Kor, Director-General of WAEC Ghana Office, Very Rev. Dr. Sam Nii Ollenu, and Ghana’s representative on the WAEC Endowment Fund, Prof. W.A Asomaning.
In a related development, UMB’s private banking unit, Prominence Club, has held its first quarterly seminar for the year under the theme “Re-thinking Performance”.
It was held in collaboration with IBS Consulting Alliance for mainly the corporate clients of UMB’s private banking unit.
Speakers at the seminar were Percy Yankey and Chris Essilfie of IBS Consulting Alliance, both of whom encouraged participants to insist on high performance standards as a cultural orientation that drives achievement of measurable business results.
UMB Boss, John Awuah assured them of the bank’s commitment to ensuring their success, saying that the bank would continue to think globally and act locally, placing high premium on the needs of clients.
