The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Ruby Sandu-Rojon has commended Ghana for making giant strides in reducing maternal mortality.
President John Mahama is expected to attend the African Union Summit in Ethiopia next week. Maternal mortality will be one of the issues that the Summit will devote much attention to.
Ms. Sandu-Rojon has therefore asked President John Mahama to highlight Ghana’s success story on maternal mortality at the meeting.
She wants the President to make it clear at the meeting, the strategies Ghana adopted to reduce maternal mortality within the context of the accelerated reduction of maternal mortality initiatives.
President John Mahama has pledged to commit resources and work towards the reduction of maternal mortality cases in the country.
Recognizing that Ghana faces a danger of not meeting the MDG target of reducing by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio, the president said cases of maternal deaths serve as an important indicator of how a nation is progressing.
"You can have the highest GDP but if women are dying in your country, you are leading no where," President Mahama stated.
The discussions centred on the need to accelerate efforts towards the reduction of maternal deaths in Ghana, ahead of the African Union summit in Addis Ababa.
