Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has announced that the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Levy by the Mahama administration is expected to generate an additional GH₵3.4 billion for the National Health Insurance Fund by the end of 2025.
He made the remarks at a stakeholders’ conference organised by the National Health Insurance Authority in Accra.
“Ten months into our administration, I am pleased to report that we have already uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy, which will make available an extra GH₵3.4 billion into the fund this year,” he announced.
He explained that the measure will help clear delays in claims payments, strengthen administrative efficiency, and ensure the scheme remains financially sustainable.
He added that the total amount of funds disbursed by NHIA this year to health care providers is GH ₵2.8 billion, adding that the timely injection of funds is increasing provider confidence, encouraging compliance, and driving enrollment growth.
According to him, the initiative, together with the Mahama Cares Programme, demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to improving healthcare delivery and enhancing the well-being of citizens.
Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, described the initiative as “unprecedented.”
He noted that it has enabled the Authority to pay service providers monthly, a significant improvement from the previous system of settling months of arrears.
