The Ghana Country Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has presented a Toyota Land Cruiser and other items to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to enable it to co-ordinate its activities in the Western and Brong-Ahafo regions.
Additionally, the UNDP gave out two motorbikes, two desktop computers equipped with a printer and 10 hand-held radios and their accessories.
Making the donation, the Country Director of the UNDP, Mr Kamil Kamaludeen, indicated that the support was in recognition of NADMO’s role in evacuating stranded Ghanaians from Libya, coupled with the humanitarian assistance to Ivorian refugees who fled that country during the political crisis there.
He explained that the UNDP, as a major development partner, was gratified about the outcome of a joint assessment and audit carried out on NADMO’s performance in the area of disaster prevention and response and said he was optimistic that the items would go to further serve the welfare of refugees in the two regions.
The National Co-ordinator of NADMO, Mr Kofi Portuphy, who received the items on behalf of the organisation, paid tribute to the UNDP for its immense support.
He said the two institutions had worked as partners in humanitarian efforts, with the UNDP assisting NADMO in developing recovery programmes to ensure the adequate protection of flooded communities following the integration of the UNDP’s activities on climate change into those of NADMO.
