Some residents including school children are busy looting shops belonging to Moslems in Hohoe in the Volta Region a day after violent clashes claimed two lives.
The looters are parting with shoes, door locks, nails and other valuables from the shops that were attacked yesterday, Joy News Agbeko Ben Coffie reported.
Moslem youth and indigenes of Hohoe were involved in bloody exchanges following the exhumation of the body of a chief imam who was buried on Sunday.
The angry Moslem youth attacked the Palace of the Gbi traditional area and destroyed the car said to be owned by Togbega Gabusu, chief of Gbi Traditional area, accusing him of ordering the exhumation of the body.
Loyalists to Tobgega Gabusu in retaliation also attacked Moslems and set fire to shops. Two people died in the clashes with the police and military stepping in to restore law and order.
The Regional Security Council in consultation with the Interior Ministry imposed a six-to-six curfew to arrest the state of lawlessness in the area.
Calm has returned but the looting is going on unabated.
One of the looters told Joy News correspondent Agbeko Ben Coffie they are helping Zoomlion to clear the mess created as result of yesterday’s burning.
Others said they were gathering the door locks and other metals from the shops to offer as scraps.
Meanwhile, the National Chief Imam Sheik Nunu Sharabutu has arrived in the Volta Region to broker peace in the area.
He is meeting with the Regional Security Command and other stakeholders in the area and appealing to the Moslem youth to remain calm.
Regional Minister Henry Ford Kamel told Joy News calm has returned to the area.
He said the objective of his outfit is to heal wounds and calm nerves, adding their immediate concern is maintain security in the area.
