As part activities to mark the Global Hand washing Day on October 15, Unilever Ghana Limited has constructed a Hygiene Station for the Presbyterian Cluster of School at Tema New Town. The facility worth fifty thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢50,000) comprises eight washrooms and six handwashing units for both teachers and pupils. The gesture, the company says, is one of its community service investments aimed at inculcating the habit of regular handwashing with soap in children. Handing over the facility to the management of the school, Brand Building Director of Unilever Ghana, Maidie Arkutu reiterated the company’s readiness to improving the health status of people in communities within which they operate. She said Unilever Ghana is committed to improve the health and wellbeing of a billion people around the world by 2020. Mrs. Arkutu underscored the need for parents to ensure that their children wash their hands with soap and water before eating. “Children are everyone’s business because they are our future leaders. We therefore need to work together for their wellbeing,” she added. The Brand Building Director said Unilever through its social mission branded programs like Lifebuoy’s hand washing campaign, Pepsodent’s twice a day brushing campaign, Blueband’s growth challenge provide solutions to the day to day challenges that inhibit consumers ability to enjoy a complete state of health. “Washing your hands with soap and water can avert one million deaths a year therefore making hand washing with soap before eating and after using the toilet a regular practice can save more lives”. Maidie Arkutu urged the school to make adequate use of the facility to the benefit of the children. On her part, Head of the Presbyterian Cluster of School, Patience Arthur-Badoo commended Unilever Ghana for the kind gesture. She urged other corporate entities to emulate the Unilever example and ensure they make an impact in the society. Also, a representative of the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II, said the project has come at an opportune time. He said sanitation is a major problem in Tema and that the Traditional Council will be grateful if other companies will join hands with Unilever to solve the growing canker. He also used the occasion to appeal for more developmental projects in the area to empower the youth.
