Nana Kofi Adu, General Secretary, Union of Private Security Employees of Ghana, has called for an Executive instrument which would make it an offence for heads of Security Service Companies to dishonour trade unions invitation for negotiations or conflict resolution. He said unlike the previous labour act which makes it mandatory for all Chief Executives to respond to calls by union officials, the new labour law does not make it an offence if they refuse to meet and listen to union officials. Making the call at a general meeting of the union in Accra on Wednesday, Nana Adu said, "so anytime we approach the employers for a meeting they treat us the way they like". He said an efficient and effective security services would depend, to a greater extent on the co-operation of the employers because that would create a congenial atmosphere for the employees to offer their best. Nana Adu said for example, employees in some security companies work 12 hours a day for six days without corresponding overtime payment. He said most security company bosses were ignorant of labour laws and because of their background they do not appreciate the role of trade unions in nation building. Nana Adu also said that, in addition to the free medical care the union was offering, it was holding talks with officials of National Insurance Scheme to have members registered and for that reason, they should joint the scheme when it agreed to come to their aid.
