An appeal has gone to Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to encourage untrained teachers to make good use of the courses being offered by universities and colleges to upgrade themselves.
Mr. Joseph Foster Andoh, the District Chief Executive of Twifo Heman Lower Denkyira who made the appeal at the third delegates conference of the district branch of the association at Twifo Praso, however cautioned teachers that the dispensation must not be to the detriment of school children.
The conference under the theme Teacher Unions response to the challenges of Globalization: professional challenges, was attended by 100 delegates.
Mr. Andoh said it is pertinent to mention that the teacher constitutes an important stakeholder in the government’s desire to reduce illiteracy and poverty.
To this end, the government would do all it can to make teachers happy.
He appealed to GNAT to channel grievances through appropriate quarters for redress adding that when this is done, the perennial resort to industrial action by the professional bodies could be reduced.
Mr. Thomas Beefi, Central Regional secretary of GNAT, explained the single spine salary structure to the participants and appealed to the government to implement the scheme early next year as agreed by all the parties concerned.
Mr. John D. Odoom the district Director of Education attributed the falling standards of education in the district to absenteeism and asked the teachers to do their best to uplift the standard of education.
