Maxwell Kofi Jumah, a former Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency in the Ashanti Region has been arrested for destroying electoral materials.

Mr. Jumah who is seeking a return to the legislature was handcuffed and whisked away by the police supervising the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primary in the constituency, Luv FM’s News Editor Saeed Ali Yakubu reports.

It is not clear what might have influenced the former MP, popularly known as Kofi Ghana, to have taken the law into his own hands.

Mr. Jumah is engaged in a fierce two-horse race with the sitting MP Patricia Appiagyei who took over the former’s seat in the last primary which was characterized by provocations.

The two are facing-off again in Saturday’s primary.

According to Saeed, who has been monitoring event at the venue of voting, Kofi Jumah was the first of the two candidates to arrive at the centre without much funfair.

However, there was tumultuous roar of approval from the delegates when his competitor Patricia Appiagye stormed the venue, giving a clear signal as to who is likely to carry the day.

Voting started at about 10 am there, two hours late, and while everyone was busily going through the process to ensure a successful election, Mr. Jumah from nowhere stepped forward and vandalized some electoral materials.

His action created a chaotic scene at the venue with chairs flying over heads, Saeed observed.

Edmund Kyei, Constituency Communications Officer, told Joy News before tearing the voters’ album being used in the primary, Mr. Jumah protested vehemently that he “doesn’t believe and trust” it.

He described the former MP’s action as “shocking an amazing”, explaining that days to the election the contenders met and agreed with the regional chairman of the party to use this particular album.

He claimed he saw someone whispering into the ears of Mr. Jumah, who is also a former Mayor of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, which he suspects triggered his unlawful action.

“He took the album from the EC officials, torn it into pieces and threw the pieces on the floor,” Edmund Kyei said.

Meanwhile, voting process has stalled in the Asokwa constituency.

Even though delegates had reconvened for the process to go on, Kofi Jumah’s agent was nowhere to be found.

The Electoral Commission officer in charge of the primary insisted that the election cannot continue without the presence of Mr. Kofi Jumah or his agent.

However, Mr. Edmund Kyei said regional executives of the party have gone to the Asokwa police station where Kofi Jumah is being kept to seek bail for him to enable the process to go on.
