Double Olympic sprint champion Usain Bolt fell short of breaking Michael Johnson's world record in the 300m at the IAAF World Challenge in Ostrava. The Jamaican, 23, clocked 30.97seconds in his first competitive attempt at the distance, 0.12secs over Johnson's time. However, Johnson set his mark 10 years ago at altitude in Pretoria, where thinner air provides less resistance. Bolt's compatriot Asafa Powell won the men's 100m in 9.83secs, the fastest time over the distance this year. Powell beat the previous best time of the year, set by Bolt in Daegu, South Korea earlier this month, by 0.03secs. "I'm very satisfied with the time," said a delighted Powell. "The weather condition didn't mean a lot. I feel good, I'm in good shape." Tyrone Edgar finished fifth in a time of 10.37secs, with team-mate Craig Pickering sixth in 10.43secs. Athens 4x100m relay-winning Olympic gold medallist Mark Lewis-Francis was disqualified for a false start. Britain's defending Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohurougu finished fourth in her first race of the season in a time of 51.58secs. The race was won by home runner Denisa Scerbova in 50.85secs, with Beijing silver medallist Shericka Williams of Jamaica in second. Bolt's attempt to break Johnson's 300m record was hampered by wet conditions in the Czech Republic. The tall sprinter made a obliterated the field as he powered through numerous puddles but came up against a headwind in the final straight. And he was left frustrated as he glanced at the clock after crossing the finish line. "I'm not in the shape I was last year or the year before," said Bolt. "If I was in a good shape I think I would get a record. "The problem was I went too hard in the first 200m. The last 100m were too tough. This distance is a little different than 200m, you can't compare it." World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser won the women's 100m in 11.04secs. Britain's David Greene produced a superb performance to finish in second behind two-time world 400m hurdles champion Kerron Clement in a time of 49.05secs. Team-mate William Sharman impressed in the 110m hurdles, finishing third behind Cuba's Olympic champion Dayron Robles, who won a time of 13.12secs, with home athlete Petr Svoboda taking second. Britain's Goldie Sayers finished fourth in the women's javelin. The men's event saw Czech Petr Frydrych - coached by world recordholder Jan Zelezny - set a world's best this season with a throw of 88.23 metres. The throw was the second best ever by a Czech athlete behind Zelezny, whose world record of 98.48m has stood for over 14 years.
