The Regional Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Mr Pious Azumah Laari has directed all its members in the region to boycott all academic and co-curricular activities until their grievances are adequately addressed.
In a press conference at the Association's regional secretariat, Mr Azumah said the decision to lay down their tools has been necessitated by “obvious and needless frustrations NAGRAT as a teacher union is going through in an attempt to have their legitimate problems resolved”.
According to him, the new three months arrears policy, refusal to pay incremental credit arrears as well as the poor handling of the second tier pension scheme are some of the reasons for the seven-day strike action.
The association announced a seven-day strike action after an emergency meeting held by the National Executive Committee of NAGRAT on May 12, 2014.
Reacting to a press release by the Platform for Elite Teachers, the Chairman of the UW NAGRAT said the group was acting like detractors who are not in support of the wellbeing of teachers in the country.
“We may be chastised by our detractors as being insensitive to the plight of the Ghanaian child…but in all these vehement protestations the fact still remains that it takes a well-motivated and encouraged teacher to deliver," he concluded.
