The Eastern Regional Minister has asked American corporate bodies to start seeing Ghana especially the Eastern Region, as a reliable investment destination with a great potential for exploring new opportunities for growing their businesses and getting better returns on their investments. The Regional Minister said the Eastern region being the only region in the country to be bordered by four regions and with its numerous tourism, agriculture as well as economic potential, is the kind of area investors are yearning for to ensure good returns for their investments. Ambassador Smith made the remark when he visited the state of Michigan in the United States of America and added that Ghana is no longer the third world country to rely on little handouts from advanced countries, calling on businessmen in the state to start thinking of establishing industries in Ghana, especially in the eastern region and assuring them of reaping enough benefits. He further told the investors of the availability of natural resources and great potential workforce provided by thousands of youth who come out of various institutions every year. During discussions with the Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Regional Minister invited experts in entrepreneurship-training to help train and also change attitudes of Ghanaian youth towards self-employment in order to curb graduates’ over-reliance on government after school. In separate meetings with Mayor Bernero of Lansing and Speaker Jase Bolger of the Michigan House of representatives, the Eastern regional Minister invited corporate America to take Economic cooperation with Ghana to a higher level to make such relations more meaningful through relatively better investments to ensure sustainable economic development. Ambassador Smith additionally received a Recommitment Joint Declaration of Economic and Cultural Cooperation between the State of Michigan and The Republic of Ghana on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama from Speaker Jase Bolger on behalf of the Governor of Michigan. The Regional Minister and his entourage also visited a Bio-digester research station at Michigan State University and other liquid and solid waste management and sanitation companies in Michigan where they were shown a plant which is able to convert human and household liquid waste into electricity to power thousands of households in the state.
