The National President of the Volta Students Association (VOSA), Mr. Godwin Agbey-Yaw, has appealed to all students from the Volta Region, particularly those in the tertiary institutions in Ghana, to identify themselves with the VOSA, which is the umbrella body which identifies with the concerns of all students from the region. He said the association was championing the cause of all students from the region, and therefore urged members to desist from paying attention to community and ethnic associations such as the Anlo Students Association and Peki Students Association among others. According to Mr. Agbey-Yaw, uniting behind the regional body would help the leadership of the association address the challenges facing all students coming from the region, irrespective of which ethnic background and community relations one has. He described those who were promoting the ethnic agenda of some groupings in the region against the larger interest of all voltarians, as dangerous elements who had wormed themselves into the fold of the region, and were trying to divide and rule them, by using the students' wings against the larger interest of all Volta students. The practice, he warned, if not stopped, threatens the unity of voltarians in the various institutions in_ the country. He also described the influence of those people in the organisation of students from the region, as "apparent domineering" in pushing the agenda of ethnicity, instead of regional cause, which he believes should form the basis and interest of all students from the region. Mr. Agbey-Yaw made the appeal when he addressed the Takoradi Polytechnic branch of the VOSA during their 25th anniversary celebration of the association held in Takoradi recently. He asked for unity and solidarity among all members, to move the association forward in the supreme interest of the region. The Registrar of the Polytechnic, Mr. Addae Marfo, in an address centered on the theme of the anniversary, "Challenges of the Youth," challenged the Volta students to be abreast with the development or modem trend of information flow which he believes would inure to their benefit as they face the challenges ahead of them. He cautioned them against indiscipline, examination malpractices rowdiness and improper dressing on campus. These aforementioned negative phenomena that .have been identified as common among students he reiterated, must not be countenanced by the Volta students, but kicked against. Hammering on the dressing code of the students, he said, "Dress the way you want to be addressed." The VOSA is one of the strongest student wings on the campus of the Takoradi Polytechnic, with a large following, and over the weekend, the association marked its 25th Anniversary. Source: Chronicle
