First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu says, government may never be able to rely on the Speaker of Parliament, Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin for a successful government business.
According to him, the Majority Group will have no choice but to take advantage of the support from the independent candidate, knowing that the Speaker can not be relied upon.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for members of the Majority in Parliament and Ministers of State at the Rock City Hotel in Kwahu Nkwatia, the First Deputy Speaker charged members of the Majority to focus on how to get government business through in the 8th Parliament.
“… how to deal with the challenge of taking advantage of the one majority we have, knowing that we may never be able to rely on the Speaker in these circumstances. We must work with the view that there are 137 of us plus one, who may be presiding. In that circumstance, how do we go about reaping that one advantage we have as a caucus?” the NPP legislator for Bekwai Constituency quizzed.
He said, although the Majority is the party in government, “but it does appear that anytime we have to take a decision, we either need Mr. Speaker in the chair or all of us must vote.”
Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin on his part hinted that government needs innovative ways to generate and increase domestic revenue to meet the high expectations of Ghanaians.
He said, government requires support from all Ghanaians in its quest to innovatively generate revenue.
He, therefore, called on the Executive to address the growing concerns of wastage in the public finance system and enhance financial accountability in order to win the confidence of the Ghanaian people and taxpayers.
‘It is true that despite the funding challenge faced, the NPP government has still been able to work hard to reform the structure of the Ghanaian economy”, Afenyo stated.
