The CEO of the defunct Ghana@50 Secretariat, Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, is nursing plans of contesting the New Patriotic Party chairmanship, Joy News has learnt.
Sources close to Dr Wereko-Brobby say the man, who headed the secretariat which implemented programmes for Ghana’s 50th birthday – currently being probed by the state, – is still weighing his chances and would soon make a public announcement.
It is however not clear whether he is a registered member of the NPP from which he broke away in the late 1990s to form the United Ghana Movement (UGM).
Dr Wereko-Brobby was, in 2000, among the opposition parties that contested against the then ruling National Democratic Congress for the Presidency but results showed his performance was rather abysmal.
If he confirms his intention to contest the position, Dr Wereko-Brobby would be competing against persons including Mr Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, former Tourism Minister.
Also in the hot race are Greater Accra Chairman of the party, Sammy Crabbe, one-time aspirant, Stephen Ntim and former Majority Leader Felix Owusu Agyapong.
Meanwhile Mr Owusu-Agyapong has been speaking to Joy News and says he stands the best chance of securing the chairmanship of the elephant fraternity.
The former Majority Leader said although there are reports of factionalism in the NPP, he is in the least perturbed as he has for years maintained good relations with all high-profile members of the party.
The NPP held its national delegates conference in August this year at which the party made drastic changes to its constitution, including expanding its Electoral College as well as restricting flag-bearer aspirants.
